A Texas Tech center dedicated to autism education and research will provide information and activities for Autism Awareness Month.

Texas Tech’s Burkhart Center has scheduled several community activities, including Autism Awareness Day, a Walk for Autism Awareness, and Parent’s Night Out.

Autism Awareness Day at Rip Griffin Park on April 15th will include remarks by Coach Dan Spencer, as well as first-pitch guest Sam Scheef. The Red Raiders will be playing Houston at 1 p.m.

The seventh-annual Burkhart Walk for Autism Awareness will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at Jones AT&T Stadium. No registration fee is required, but donations are welcome, and proceeds will benefit the Burkhart Building fund.

“By raising awareness, we hope people gain a better understanding of the people who are effected by autism and see them for what they are – people, just like everyone else,” said David Richman, professor and chairman of the Burkhart Center.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that autism affects 1 in 88 Americans.
