A Southeast Texas teacher has been put on leave for allegedly making offending comments to an American-born Muslim student. The ninth grade algebra teacher at Clear Brook High School in Friendswood allegedly asked the student if she was grieving because her “uncle” died, referring to the death of Usama bin Laden.

The mother of the girl reported the incident to the school district and the unidentified teacher was put on leave so that an investigation could commence.  A district spokeswoman said the comments do not reflect the views of other staff and faculty in the district.

Frankly I’m not surprised something like this happened. The death of bin Laden was bound to create some loose tongues. The teacher deserved the suspension, and I’m glad the school district was prompt to reply to the complaint. Bin Laden was a terrorist and thousands of people’s lives have undoubtedly been saved by his death, but demonstrating such unprofessional and unwarranted spite towards a schoolgirl steps way over the line. Accusing  a 14 year old American-born Muslim girl of being related to the world's #1 terrorist leader (even jokingly) is just as stupid as accusing a blond-haired American child of being the product of the Nazi Regime.
