
Students Across Texas Skipped Classes To Protest ICE, Abbott Wants An Investigation
Hundreds, if not thousands, of Texas school children walked out of classes on Friday across Texas. The reason given? A national movement encouraging public school children to ditch class and protest Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Texas Public School Students Walk Out to Protest ICE
According to the Texas Tribune, students in Austin, Waco, San Antonio, and in other cities across Texas were allowed to walk out of class to protest ICE. Images posted on social media and news sites showed students, as young as elementary school, carrying signs and protesting. Some signs were vulgar and carried a message like "FU** ICE".
Texas Governor Calls For An Investigation
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has called on Education Commissioner Mike Morath to investigate the walk-outs, starting with Austin ISD. According to FOX7, students from 14 campuses participated in the campus walkout. Some students walked and protested all the way to the Texas Capitol.

In a post on X, Governor Abbott said that "AISD gets taxpayer dollars to teach the subjects required by the state, not to help students skip school to protest." The Governor also said that schools are for educating children, not political indoctrination.
According to FOX7, the Superintendent of Austin ISD said the protests were not sponsored or endorsed by the district. Students participating in protests could be given an unexcused absence if they left campus.
