Texas law enforcement has finally matched the DNA linking a man to several sexual assault cases that remained unsolved for nearly three decades.

Texas's Shocking Serial Rapist Cold Case

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), a horrific sexual assault case was reported in July 1997 where a man allegedly broke into the home of an elderly woman in Smithville, Texas, to sexually assault her.

Another similar case occurred in March 2004 when an elderly woman was peacefully asleep in her Bastrop County home when an unidentified man broke in at night and sexually assaulted her.

Finally, a third sexual assault case occurred in 2005 around the same area, leading investigators to try every trick in the book when it came to collecting DNA from the victims. Unfortunately, there were no positive matches on each attempt from law enforcement.

Finding a Positive Match

Efforts in finding a positive match continued to fail years later when the DNA was tested in 2021, but investigators were so close. Finally, in August 2025, after years of advancements in DNA testing technology, a positive match was discovered.

This was great news for the victims' families, but there was a catch. The identified suspect, Emory Earl McVay from Smithville, TX, has been dead for 15 years, having passed away in 2010 at the age of 48. He also had a long history of criminal activity that included multiple burglary charges.
