How Dangerous is the Viral ‘Stomach Flu’ Spreading Across Texas?
Isn't it just so exciting when we get a new virus spreading through Texas? I feel like we can't go a week without hearing about the latest brain-eating disease that's putting our lives, the lives of our kids, or even our barnyard cats at risk.
What is the Scary Norovirus Running Rampant Through Texas?
Well, the latest craze that has Texas doctors in a tizzy is called the norovirus. This stomach bug on steroids is actually a highly contagious virus that causes everyone's favorite stomach-related symptoms: vomiting and diarrhea, according to the CDC.
Some people will call norovirus the "stomach flu" as a cute nickname, but it really has no relation to the actual influenza virus.
The light at the end of the tunnel is that, although often severe, symptoms from norovirus typically last just 1 to 3 days. Careful though, just because symptoms aren't present doesn't mean the virus can't be spread.
Watch for These Symptoms of Norovirus!
During outbreaks, people young and old are at risk. Symptoms usually develop within 12 to 48 hours after exposure, and can include any of the following:
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
- Fever
- Headache
- Body aches
But wait! The fun doesn't stop there. Norovirus is also known to cause extreme dehydration, what with all the fluid your body... expels.
If you notice you are peeing less, your tears aren't falling when you cry, or your mouth is especially dry while experiencing any of the above symptoms, you should really reach out to your medical provider and seek care.
Stay Safe in Texas
Long story short on the norovirus outbreak in Texas is to disinfect high-traffic surfaces in your home, wash your hands, and don't be afraid to seek medical help if last night's dinner makes a surprise appearance once again.
