These Common Texas Political Myths Just Aren’t True
Texas is burdened with countless rumors, myths, and stereotypes that have us gun-toting, 10-gallon-hat-wearing, cattle-wrangling cowboys in the spotlight at times. What if I were to help put some of these common misconceptions to rest, once and for all?
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the myths in this story are focused on the Texas government rather than funny mannerisms that you'll see in certain parts of the Lone Star State. For instance, did you know that County Judges don't actually handle legal cases in the courtroom?
What Actually is a County Judge in Texas?
They may have this title, and sure, they may even preside over minor cases in small rural counties, but typically, County Judges are officials that serve as chief executive of the commissioners court. These roles handle budgeting, roads and public health within the county, not declaring if anyone is innocent or guilty in court.
In Lubbock County, you can even reach out to the County Judge directly or go to his office on Broadway with any concerns or questions.
How Common is the Death Penalty in Texas?
Another common stereotype of Texas is that the death penalty is carried out all the time. Texas may lead the nation in executions, but it's still quite rare for death sentences to be carried out.
In fact, as the years go by, death penalties are increasingly more rare. Many counties veer away from this form of punishment and tend to gravitate to life without parole instead.
Who Holds the Power in Texas?
Finally, a common misconception is that the Texas Governor has the most power in the state. While it's true that the Texas Governor does have certain authority and veto power, the office is still limited by the distribution of power.
In fact, the Lt. Governor typically has more involvement in legislative action and presides over the Senate with appointing committee chairs, advancing bills, and even playing a key role in the state's budget.
