Lubbock PD Warns Citizens of Deadly Wrong-Way Drivers
As construction continues on Loop 88, certain lanes have been closed or changed, and driving is getting dangerous. The problem is that humans are creatures of habit, and when you have lanes going one direction for so many years, then you decide to flip them, certain people fail to get with the times.
Construction Leads to Destruction
The westbound lanes were closed for years, forcing drivers going to and fro to stay on one side of the loop. This, however, has recently changed, which is good! The bad news is that some people are driving the wrong way down the loop as a result of the change.
Texas DPS actually had to put more signs up that tell drivers 'wrong way' or 'do no enter', since driving the wrong way down a road counts as traffic violation that could indeed lead to a citation, Everything Lubbock reports.
LPD urges all drivers to stay alert to road signs and be safe when travelling on the loop, you never know what you'll encounter that could threaten the safety of you or others!
Texas Heading the Wrong Way
Texas actually led the nation in wrong-way crash fatalities in 2021, accounting for nearly 20% of all wrong-way crash deaths. Thanks to the Carlson Law Firm, we can see the major risk factors that lead to wrong-way driving:
- Impairment
- Senior citizen drivers
- No passengers, just the driver
- Unfamiliar with the area
- Unable to see at night
- Ignoring road laws
- Passing when unsafe
- Driving between midnight at 5 a.m.
The most common hour for wrong-way driving accidents is 2 a.m. This is because most bars close around two in the morning. Carlson also states that deaths from wrong-way driving are completely preventable.
