The first day of school is just around the corner for kids across Texas, and that means this weekend will be one of the big final shopping weekends for Texas families to get ready for school.

And this weekend also happens to be tax-free weekend in Texas.

Texas Tax-Free Weekend August 8-10

So what does tax-free weekend cover? From August 8 through midnight on Sunday, August 10, parents can enjoy saving on the sales tax on purchases of most clothing, shoes, school supplies, and backpacks. Items have to be under $100 in price in order to qualify.

Purchases can be made in person and online. The list of what qualifies to be tax-free is pretty extensive, but it includes clothing and shoes under $100. Backpacks and school supplies under $100. For a full list of what qualifies, look here.

Not All Items Are Tax-FreeAccording to the Texas Comptroller's Office, there are many items that are not on the approved list of tax-free items. Those include:

  • items sold for $100 or more
  • clothing subscription boxes
  • specially-designed athletic activity or protective-use clothing or footwear
    • For example, golf cleats and football pads are usually worn only when people play golf or football, so they do not qualify for the exemption.
    • Tennis shoes, jogging suits and swimsuits, however, can be worn for other than athletic activity and qualify for the exemption.
  • clothing or footwear rentals, alterations (including embroidery) and cleaning services
  • items used to make or repair clothing, such as fabric, thread, yarn, buttons, snaps, hooks and zippers
  • jewelry, handbags, purses, briefcases, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, watches and other accessories
  • computers
  • software
  • textbooks

So happy shopping this weekend, and try to do as much as you can locally. Our local stores could use the help.
