"Public safety is about letting every citizen know. (The cellphone) isn't a foolproof device...but the advantage that were going after is that its another tool in the toolbox. It's another way to protect the citizens," Jeff said.

Griffith explained their decision, saying, The last thing you want to do is increase the tax rate, I mean it's the very last thing you want to do. The reason we did this, and we've talked about this for almost 2 years, is our plan for the police substations and community policing. We're already doing community policing, as you all know, and we need to be brutally honest about how great our city is, but we have big city crime issues, especially with property crime.

In the first day of work sessions for the upcoming budget, city staff presented the Lubbock City Council with a proposed one cent property tax rate increase for the FY 2019-2020 budget. The budget will be voted upon in August.
