Lubbock barber Maurice Stanley announced his intention to run for the District 3 Lubbock City Council seat during a Thursday afternoon press conference.

Stanley made his announcement  standing where he usually spends his entire day, behind a customer sitting in a barber's chair.

The first official day for a candidate to sign up for the May 10, 2014 municipal election is January 29. Mayor Glen Robertson is up for re-election as well as District 1 Councilman Victor Hernandez and District 5 Councilwoman Karen Gibson.

Councilman Todd Klein, who has held the seat since winning a special election in 2007 and winning re-election in 2010, decided in late 2013 not to seek re-election.

Stanley, a native of Quanah and a 1970 Texas Tech graduate, listed his main concerns as the city's water, electricity, job creation and retention, maintaining city infrastructure and reducing city debt. Stanley, who regularly attends, and often speaks at City Council meetings, has served on a variety of city boards and committees, including the 2009 and 2014 bond committees and the city’s redistricting advisory committee in 2011.
