Lubbock's own jazz musician Joy Harris will be taking the stage this summer at the Buddy Holly Center's Summer Showcase on June 2nd, 2022.

Harris is originally from Lubbock and attended Texas Tech for Percussion Performance, making her connection to the sweet sounds of the Hub City a deep one. Her musical talents come together and form a life of their own, with styles ranging from jazz to country.

In an interview with Hub City Spokes, Harris said that she's been playing music since the age of 4. In her high school years, Harris had a band and learned to play bass, which she said she liked due to the ability to be groovy and move freely around stage rather than be kept in one place, like with keyboards or drums.

"Lubbock's music scene is a hidden gem," said Harris in multiple instances about how the music scene compares to other places she has traveled to.

Before attending Texas Tech University, Harris dabbled in secular music like Led Zeppelin and Metallica, adding to her own personal style, then moving on to post-graduate touring with Texas country bands. Harris did not let the Covid-19 lockdown hurt her. While the world was on pause, she used it as a period to build a foundation and find potential places to build her name within the community for when the lockdowns were lifted.

Aside from the Buddy Holly Center Summer Showcase, Joy Harris is currently performing for free every Thursday until August 18th in the Meadows Courtyard, located at the Buddy Holly Center, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
