The Snyder Police Officer who was shot last week remains in critical condition; however doctors say his condition is slowly improving.

Doctors say he opened his eyes twice over the weekend, and has answered questions with the movement of his thumb. Officer Darrell Campbell was shot in the head while responding to reports of shots being fired last Tuesday in Snyder. When the officers arrived on the scene, 41 year old Dwayne Birmingham opened fire on Campbell before being shot and killed by another officer.

Campbell was airlifted to UMC in Lubbock where he underwent surgery for the bullet wound. The 41 year old Campbell has a wife and several children.

Officer Lee Ortiz, the man who shot and killed Birmingham, has since been taken off of administrative leave. It is protocol to place an officer on leave in situations where a perpetrator has been shot.
