The Sheriff told the Dallas Morning News that the investigation began on July 19 when investigators arrived at the home after a relative called authorities, worried about the wife. During their search, authorities could smell the "distinct odor of decomposition of a body".

The wife's body was found wrapped in plastic.

Husband Arrested After Wife's Remains Found

Authorities arrested Charles at a separate home on July 20. The Dallas Morning News reports that Salazar told police he assaulted his wife on June 16 and killed her. He then decided to live alongside her corpse while attempting to mask the smell.

Charles Byrd said he believed he would be caught, telling deputies he was attempting “to prolong the process,” Salazar said.

As he was being taken to a patrol car, he admitted to killing his wife, who he said he “loved.” He said he had a “mental break.”

Authorities said upgraded charges are likely following the identification of the body.

He has been placed in the Bexar County Jail and is being held without bond.
