The Village Theater — Once Upon a Time in Lubbock
Did you know that there once was a movie theater on 34th Street? I didn't have a clue until I came across some information that someone provided me.
The Village Theater was located at 2329 34th Street. This theater was a single screen theater that originally ran first-run films and could seat around 800 people, though the number has been in dispute by former patrons.
The Village opened on February 12, 1954, with Irving Berlin's There's No Business Like Show Business.
Some of the films it ran included Becket (as seen above), A Hard Day's Night, South Pacific, Werewolves on Wheels, and odd ones like House of Whipcord.
The theater closed in 1980 with the operation of larger theaters like the Fox 4 and the 4 Screen UA Theater at the Mall.
The location has been DJ's Sports and Batting Cages for as long as I can remember.
Lubbock has an amazing past when it comes to theaters. It's a shame that most of them are long gone, making way for the 16 and 24+ screens that people want today.
