Olton ISD Is Arming Certain Teachers and Staff This School Year
Olton ISD will allow certain teachers and other district employees to carry a firearm through the Guardian Program.
The Guardian Program consist of certain trained teachers and staff members to protect students in case of an active school shooting.
KAMC news reports there are signs around the school grounds to notify the public that Olton ISD staff are armed and are equipped to do whatever is necessary to protect students and staff.
For safety purposes, those who are carrying a firearm are not identified and are spread out across each campus. The guardians must be licensed to carry, trained, and have certified ammo and holsters.
"We're here to educate students, we're not here to pick a fight, but at the same time, there's plenty of places where you've seen the fight was brought to the school, and it's not what we're looking for we're here to educate kids, but we're also here to protect them," Superintendent Kevin McCasland said.
McCasland said the discussion of having armed staff started last spring but by the end of the summer, all of the polices were put into place, the training was completed, and the right individuals were selected.
