Come Back Later, Alligator

A local expert, Brian Henley with the Cameron Park Zoo, helped shed some light on the scaly situation. He said that one reason this gator was spotted out in the open is because it most likely was hibernating for months.

Sometimes, alligators can actually dig a hole in the side of a riverbed to catch some Zs during winter. It's not until the spring and summer months when they emerge to eat, explore, and make some adorable little lizard babies.

It's Been a While, Crocodile

Last year, it seemed there were alligators sprouting up here and there across Texas, but sightings have been scarce since then. Until now.

Apparently, alligators were common around the Brazos river in the 1940s, but thanks to factors like hunting, they nearly disappeared. That is, until we are graced by their presence every once in a while like right now.

Is Human Society as We Know it in Danger?

Fret not! Alligators, just like the one spotted in the Brazos river, mostly feed on fish and small mammals. Much like your average bee or snake, alligators will most likely not attack humans unless provoked.

Also, please don't feed wild alligators. I know it seems cool, but it's actually illegal in Texas and comes with a fine of up to $500 if caught.
