Man Arrested as He Attempted to Bring a Gun to a Protest at the Tim Cole Memorial in Lubbock

The first protest in West Texas, related to the death of George Floyd, occurred Saturday evening in Lubbock.

The site of the protest was the Tim Cole Memorial at 19th Street and University Avenue, located across the street from the Texas Tech University campus. At least 50 people were participating in the protest, chanting various sayings at Lubbock Police, including, "Hand Up, Don't Shoot!", "Black Lives Matter", and "I can't breathe!".

The most dramatic part of the protest was when a man starts walking toward the site of the protest from the 2000 block of University Avenue armed with an assault rifle.  In the dramatic video shown below, the man is confronted by an officer, puts down his gun and then gets tackled to the ground by a bystander. Video then shows that the gun, most likely an AK-47, was fully loaded with ammo.

While this protest was occurring in Lubbock, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that he is deploying the National Guard to various cities across the state, to deal with the violent protests being made in the name of George Floyd.
