The City of Lubbock has issued a reminder to all citizens regarding the violations tied to running a sprinkler during freezing weather. It's not just because they're bored and want to mess with you, there's actually a pretty good reason that has to do with public safety.

Sprinkler Violations in Lubbock

According to chapters 22 and 39 of Lubbock ordinances, homeowners/renters shall not operate their sprinklers during sub-freezing temperatures.

Why? Because the runoff could spread to the roads and freeze, causing unsafe slippery conditions for Lubbock drivers. It can also lead to freezing puddles on sidewalks that pose safety hazards for pedestrians and those confined to wheelchairs/crutches.

Chapter 22 of the city ordinance actually includes other precipitation events along with freezing temps.

For example, if you have any form of sprinkler system on your property, you should also install a water meter. If the meter identifies 1/4 inch of moisture in the air or more, your sprinkler is NOT ALLOWED to be in operation.

Lubbock Nuisances

Another common factor you must keep in mind when living on property in Lubbock are nuisances—my favorite ordinance, really.

These refer to the interference of your neighbor's right to reasonable use and enjoyment of their property. This applies rain or shine, day or night.

Ways in which this is violated include the emission into their yard of the following:

  • Dust
  • Smoke
  • Odor
  • Glare
  • Noise
  • Trash
  • Water spray

Did you also know that vibrations carrying from your property into your neighbor's also counts as a nuisance, according to Chapter 39 of Lubbock ordinances.

So, the next time you hook up your sprinklers and think about watering your ever-so-thirsty West Texas lawn, just keep an eye on the upcoming temperatures. You don't want to be busted for violating a city ordinance without even knowing, trust me.
