A local middle school student left the building and went into a nearby playa lake.

Lubbock ISD spokeswoman Nancy Sharp says that around 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, a student left Atkins Middle School at 54th Street and Avenue U, with two teachers and a teaching assistant attempting to redirect him.

Sharp said that the circumstances did not warrant restraint of the student, who then asked to go across the street to the playa lake to look at the geese.

In an effort to deescalate the situation, the teachers went with the student to the lake. After looking at the geese for a few minutes, the student entered the water past his ankles.

As the staff members attempted to coax the student out of the water, he fell and was completely wet.

A teacher and a Lubbock Police officer that drove up to the scene went into the water to retrieve the student.

The student was taken to an area hospital where he was treated and released.
