Lubbock ISD students and staff did a hefty amount of reading during the summer months.

LISD sponsored the Summer Reading Challenge, and each participant completed a reading journal of books read over the summer, with Pre-Kindergarten through second grade required to read eight books, and grades three through 12, as well as adult staff, challenged to read five books to be eligible for prize drawings.

More than 2,200 students, faculty, and staff from LISD participated, with over 50,000 books read this summer.

Thirty-six LISD libraries were open on Tuesdays during the summer for the program.

All participants received a certificate and a t-shirt, and the Lubbock ISD Foundation for Excellence provided more than $5,500 in promotional materials and prizes for the event.

Prizes included books, gift cards, and e-readers.
