At their meeting Thursday evening, the Lubbock City Council gave final approval to a petition for requested annexation.

The petition for annexation was made by Ford Development for approximately 76 acres of land half-a-mile south of Farm-to-Market Road 1585, just east of Quaker Avenue.

The land, owned by Ford Development, is planned to be used as part of their Kelsey Park neighborhood development, which is currently in progress north of the requested annexation site.

The City of Lubbock may only annex the requested area.

Public hearings and two more votes from the council are still needed to finalize the annexation, as accepting the petition only starts the annexation process.

Some citizens spoke against the annexation, saying that they would prefer more attention being paid by the City to infrastructure in other areas of the city before expanding.

The Council approved the measure 5-1, District One Councilman Victor Hernandez voting against and Mayor Glen Robertson Absent.
