Justin Verlander Takes Home 2nd Career Cy Young Award Edging Out Gerrit Cole
For the first time since the 2011 season, and for just the second time in his career, Justin Verlander is the American League Cy Young Award winner.
Justin Verlander had another outstanding season for the Houston Astros in 2019. He finished with a record of 21-6, holding an ERA of 2.58. He also eclipsed 300 punchouts for the first time in his career.
Verlander received 17 first-place votes compared to 13 for Gerrit Cole in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Tampa Bay Rays right-handed pitcher Charlie Morton finished third, a year after leaving Houston in free agency.
