A judge in Lubbock, Texas has scheduled a competency hearing for Jerry Ba Nguyen, the man accused of forcing American Airlines flight 2542 to make an emergency landing.

Nguyen's attorney had made the formal request for a competency examination back in October, Everything Lubbock reports:

Mr. Nguyen exhibits erratic behavior, inability to control his thoughts, and paranoia. Mr. Nguyen also reports suicidal thoughts, along with visual and auditory hallucinations. A psychological evaluation is requested for Mr. Nguyen, as it is clear that competency and insanity are at issue in this case.

American Airlines flight 2542 landed at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016. It was originally scheduled to land at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Nguyen was taken into custody by authorities in Lubbock once the flight was on the ground.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Nguyen was charged with a federal charge of Interfering with a Flight Crew after he allegedly kicked the plane's cockpit door. The act came after Nguyen made suicidal statements and claimed the U.S. government was responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attack. Nguyen was eventually detained by flight staff with the help of passengers.

Nguyen's hearing was set for January 26, 2017 at 10 a.m. He faces a maximum of 20 years in federal prison if found guilty.
