The South Plains Mall is always changing and this is something big.

Back in 2018, Sears closed at the mall. Since then the building has sat empty. In 2024 that is changing.

According to the website of Empire Mall’s owner, Simon Property Group, the new mall anchor is listed only as “Coming Soon,” followed by a description of the Dillard’s company: Dillard's focuses on delivering maximum value to its shoppers by providing fairly priced merchandise, complemented by exceptional customer service. Dillard's stores offer a broad selection of merchandise, including products sourced and marketed under Dillard's private-brand names.

The new store, which will replace the two already in the mall, will be in the former Sears. Dillard’s opened its South Plains Mall store in July 1972. The new location will be 220,000 sq. ft., with construction beginning immediately, according to a company news release.

"We could not be more pleased that Dillard's is expanding its presence at South Plains, Lubbock's leading retail destination," said Ed Coppola, Macerich President. "The brand's expansion in Lubbock speaks to Dillard's long history of delighting customers with desirable products and stellar service, its strength as a company, and the continued appeal of South Plains Mall."
The new store is expected to open in early 2024, and will feature the "latest enhancements in store design, merchandising and technology and feature a premium lineup of brands tailored specifically to the tastes and preferences of Dillard's West Texas customers."

They are hoping to open in 2024.
