Where to Buy Beef Directly From Ranchers Around Lubbock
There are certain things that just seem to taste better when you know exactly where they came from.
Tomatoes from somebody's garden. Peaches from a roadside stand. And a ribeye that didn't have to travel halfway across the world before landing on your grill.

If you've ever wondered whether you can buy beef directly from ranchers and cattle producers around Lubbock, the answer is absolutely yes!
And in some cases, you can buy enough beef to make your freezer look like you're preparing for the apocalypse.
Patterson Ranch Near Lubbock
One of the best options I found is Patterson Ranch, a multi-generational cattle operation in Cochran County near Lubbock.
Patterson raises Hereford/Angus-cross cattle and offers both grass-finished and grain-finished beef.

You don't have to buy an entire cow, either. They offer individual cuts and beef boxes, along with quarter, half, and whole beef purchases.
You can also find Patterson Ranch products at the Wolfforth Farmers Market.
Holy Cow Beef in Lubbock
Another option is Holy Cow Beef, which specializes in 100% grass-fed and grass-finished West Texas beef.
They offer individual cuts as well as bulk beef options, making this a good place to investigate if you've finally decided that the empty freezer in your garage needs a purpose in life.
More West Texas Beef Options
Canyon Valley Provisions offers pasture-raised, grass-finished beef with Lubbock pickup options. Their offerings have included bulk ground beef and quarter-beef packages.

There's also Forrest Ranch Beef in nearby Slaton, another cattle producer worth contacting about current beef availability and purchasing options.

There's also Pope Meat Company, who said, "We are a local slaughterhouse and processor! We have many local ranchers who have beef available and are feeding out for the weeks to come. We are USDA inspected and would love to help get you in contact with our customers! Located in Lockney but deliver to Lubbock since we live here. Support your local farmers and ranchers!!"
Listener Cory Thomason suggests Henderson Beef. Saying, "In Seymour is where we get ours. Best beef I've ever eaten."
Finally, Lubbock has The Butcher Shop at 4404 122nd Street, a producer-owned operation selling beef raised on its own ranch. Technically, you're walking into a butcher shop rather than pulling up to the ranch house, but it's still a considerably shorter trip from producer to dinner table than conventional grocery-store beef.
Buying a Quarter or Half Cow
This is where buying directly from producers gets interesting.
Instead of buying two steaks here and three pounds of hamburger there, many ranchers allow customers to purchase a quarter, half or even an entire beef.
You'll typically receive a mixture of steaks, roasts, ground beef, and other cuts after processing.
Of course, there's one important consideration:
Freezer space.
Buying half a cow because you found a great deal and then realizing your freezer currently contains 14 frozen pizzas, six bags of ice, and something wrapped in foil from 2023 is poor planning.
For Lubbock-area families who eat a lot of beef, though, buying locally and in bulk can be a great way to stock the freezer while supporting the West Texas ranchers who raised it.
And around here, we certainly don't have a shortage of cattle.
