The Texas Department of Public Safety will be working with the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office, Lubbock Police Department, and Lubbock County District Attorney's Office to present the Citizens Academy. The Citizens Academy is a 14-week class that introduces it's students to law enforcement, prosecutors, and a variety of programs while they learn what each service does.

This academy educates students about the daily safety challenges local law enforcement and prosecutors face in their day to day lives. The academy classes will be held in various offices, such as DPS, LSO, LPD, and the Lubbock County Courthouse, so that students can get a real understanding of what goes on.

A wide variety of agency's and what they do will be covered in this 14-week course. That includes SWAT, crash investigations, K-9 units, firearms training, courtroom procedures, and criminal prosecution along with many more.

Applications for the Citizens Academy are currently open through February 19, 2024 at 5 p.m. for those interested. The Citizens Academy will begin on February 27, 2024 for those that sign up and will be held weekly on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the various course locations. Anyone interested in becoming a student or with any questions can contact Sergeant Johnny Bures at johnny.bures@dps.texas.gov or at 806-224-5031 or contact Corporal Patricia Holbert at pholbert@lubbockcounty.gov or at 806-775-1496.
