Introduction

I am writing this on what is essentially "open house" day for prospective Texas Tech students. Whether you are a student, a transplant, or someone just preparing for a visit to the Hub City, I have a few insider tips on how things are a little different here.

The Geography

Lubbock is a bit of an oasis. I know this because in pre-internet times, Lubbock was a place that was singled out for a lot of test marketing. There were more than a few products that were introduced in this market to gauge reaction and decide how to move forward with the interest shown. I suppose with it's distance from other towns, companies used towns like Lubbock (and Spokane, Washington) because they wouldn't have to worry too much about possibly negative reactions and/or tweaks to their products or marketing.

Lubbock Is Lubbock

I think anyone who has lived here will agree with the phrase, "Lubbock is Lubbock". Whether it's good or bad, you pretty much know what you're going to get in Lubbock and change takes decades to happen. It used to take a couple years for coastal trends to even reach the Hub City, and few stick even now. You could go away for many, many years and most of the businesses and almost all of the attitudes will be the same when you get back.

Lubbock Is Texas Tech

Texas Tech plays what I would call and oversized roll in the Hub City. Instead of city facilities we have Texas Tech facilities. Texas Tech tends to drive whatever changes both large and small in the town. Why the City Of Lubbock tends to kick the progress can down the corner, Texas Tech often leads in innovation. I'm afraid of what Lubbock would be like without Texas Tech (okay, it would be Amarillo and we sure as heck don't need another one of those).  So there you go, here's the Top 11 Things You Should Expect In Lubbock Texas:
