Texas Tech had a freak explosion/fire yesterday.

Texas Tech Experiences A Fire

By now you've probably seen the freaky lime green fire shooting out of a manhole cover at Texas Tech University (if you haven't I'll attach a video below). If you didn't know, there are about ten miles of tunnels underneath Texas Tech and that's just the beginning of a very strange story. It does look like Wednesday incident came from one of the tunnels.

The Secret Tunnels

The fact is, there are all kinds of tunnels under Lubbock. Supposedly one connect or did connect the Lubbock High School Auditorium to Texas Tech. There are more downtown, including one that connects to the Lubbock Avalanche Journal that was in use as late as 2023, and possibly still today.

Urban Exploring

I have not personally travelled this tunnel system (even though it seems like something I'd do). I cannot speak on the state of the system, access, or what could possibly get down there to release such bizarre flames. My only thought when I saw the first was "People could be down there". So far there have been no reports of injuries or deaths and hopefully things will stay that way. In the meantime, Texas Tech told students to go ahead and start Spring Break and released this Tech Update:

This is an emergency notification from Texas Tech University. The power remains out on campus, but barricades are being removed and students are allowed in the residence halls. Please continue to avoid the Engineering Key. Employees should not return to campus to gather their belongings until further notice.

Waiting For An Update

This is potentially some very scary stuff and no one seems to be saying what exactly happened. Again, I'm not sure how often or if any of these tunnels are in use anymore, but how they got filled with enough gas/material to spew flames is pretty frightening.
