The sports mentality in Texas can be downright hateful at times.

The Transfer Portal

Without getting down into the weeds here, the transfer portal allows players to move to a school that they feel better suits them and/or their needs. This drives some sports fans crazy because they are living in the past.

What Is Commitment?

Some fans get the raw red butt because players transfer away from the school they support. They love to seize on the fact that a player "committed" to that school once upon a time when they were in or barely out of high school. Everyone needs to get used to the idea that the word "commitment" in 2023 now is a yearly thing.

What's At Stake?

Some players want more playing time. Some want a better shot at the NFL. Some want to be closer to home. Some just want a new experience. Some need cash. I fail to see how any of those things make a player wrong for transferring to a new school. I'm sure some fans think a school has "invested" in a player and thus they owe it to the school to stay, but that's just not the case.

A Player Is Like An Employee

When a player commits to a school, they are saying, "I want my talents to be used at this school". If the school doesn't utilize those talents and/or take care of that talent in a way that makes them feel valued, then I can't blame them for moving on. It's the same thing at your job, if you aren't treated right, you move on to something better that will take you to the next level.

They Owe You Nothing

Coaches don't guarantee playing time so players shouldn't have to guarantee that they'll be there when needed. The idea of "school spirit" is outdated and played out even on a high school level. A player can have pride in their performance and in the team they are currently on and still want more for themselves.  Let's not be nasty to them on their way out, let's thank them for the time we had them and move on.
