Additional funding has been allocated for Lubbock’s freeway.

The Texas Transportation Commission has allocated $36 million for continued construction on the Marsha Sharp Freeway.

The funding was approved on Thursday during the May meeting of the TTC.

The money will be applied to the project, which includes an interchange between US 62/US 82 and Upland Avenue, as well as an interchange between US 62/US 82 and Spur 327.

According to TxDOT, the completed phase of the freeway will connect Lubbock to Wolfforth.

“This project has been a top priority for this district and the Lubbock Metropolitan Planning Organization for several years, and is moving more quickly than originally planned,” said Commissioner Fred Underwood. “Its completion will be a great thing for the people in the Lubbock metro area for years to come.”

TxDOT says that they plan to receive bids in August of 2014, and construction will likely begin by the end of the year.
