Hurricane Francine Predicted To Form In The Gulf, Will it Hit Texas?
It's been pretty quite in the Gulf of Mexico and the tropics as far as tropical storms are concerned, but it appears as though that peace and quite is about to come to an end.
The National Hurricane Center is now tracking what could become Tropical Cyclone 6 in the Gulf of Mexico. According to FOX Weather, the system is expected to become a tropical storm at the beginning of the week then form into Hurricane Francine before making landfall.
Will Hurricane Francine Hit Texas?
While it's too early to predict exactly where the storm will make landfall, the National Weather Service told FOX Weather that as of today, they believe the system could make landfall around the Texas/Louisiana state line. An updated forecast on Monday morning shows that the storm could push to the east with a greater impact on Louisiana. However, NOAA still warns of possible flooding rain for parts of Texas even if the storm doesn't make landfall close to the Texas State Line.
"While it is too soon to pinpoint the exact location and magnitude of impacts, the potential for life-threatening storm surge and damage winds are increasing for portions of the Upper Texas and Louisiana coastlines beginning Tuesday night," the NHC said.
Parts of Texas could see rain and wind beginning late Tuesday night. The storm is expected to make landfall on Wednesday.
According to WFAA in Dallas, portions of the Texas coast along with Houston could see rain and tropical storm force winds. It is unlikely that Francine will become a "major" Hurricane, but data right now shows that it could reach a category 1 storm before making landfall. Forecasts also show Louisiana getting more rain from the storm than Texas. Though the forecast could change.
On Sunday night, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that additional state emergency resources had been activated ahead of the storm.
