Thursday on Lubbock's First News, Mitchel Anderson talked with Tom and Laura about the Key Ceremony to be held this morning, during which Shawn Walton and his family will receive the key to their new home.

Walton enlisted in the U.S. army in 2004, but was injured by an improvised explosive device while serving in Iraq in 2007.Walton has endured multiple surgeries and has limited mobility. The mortgage-free home is the third given to a disabled veteran and family.

Anderson observed how the event brings people together. While the family is involved in the building process, local businesses, builders, and vendors all work together to complete the project. Anderson said, "[I]t's pretty neat to see the whole community come together to do this."

The Key Ceremony will take place at 11:00 am this morning at 2911 108th and is open to the public.

Shawn Walton and his family's full story can be found on the Homes for Heroes website.
