Unfortunately, criminals take a time that's normally meant for having fun with friends and family and turn it into a spree of breaking laws.

Halloween is no exception, and while some are out enjoying the holiday, others are taking advantage of vulnerable people to commit some of the most common crimes on October 31.

Halloween Crime in Texas

As one of the busiest nights of the year for police, Halloween sees an uptick in five specific crimes across the state of Texas, according to Barton & Associates, a Texas-based law firm.

Theft and Assault

Two common crimes more prevalent on Halloween are theft and assault. When you mix a large number of people together with alcohol, some arguments turn physical, either with or without a weapon involved.

Theft is very common as many costumes are naturally darker, allowing individuals to move unseen through yards and homes. Also, with so many strangers naturally wandering around your house on one night, it can be easy to miss someone sneaking around for nefarious reasons.

Vandalism and Disorderly Conduct

Next, Texas cops see an increase in vandalism and disorderly conduct on Halloween night. Whether it's egging cars, spray-painting buildings or throwing toilet paper on trees, some Halloween pranks can cross the line and result in misdemeanors or felony charges.

Disorderly conduct is common with many holiday parties. Someone gets out of line with some friends and turns a fun night on the town into a violent criminal charge.

DWI's

Finally, police in Texas see a large surge in arrests due to driving while intoxicated (DWI) on Halloween night. Alcohol is often served at holiday get-togethers, and when someone who has had a bit too much attempts to drive home with children walking all over the street, only bad things can happen.

It's important to keep an eye out for these common crimes if you plan on going out for Halloween with friends or family. Just because everyone is having a good time doesn't mean things can't turn dangerous in an instant.
