Get Ready! Freezing Temperatures Are Coming To Texas
***Edited at 2:45pm 10/9/23 for NEW Panhandle freeze prediction from NWS***
Fall has arrived in Texas and many are enjoying the temperatures and weather change outdoors. This past weekend I was in Dallas and high's were in the low 70's on Saturday with sunny skies. It was even slightly chilly in the morning. Here in Lubbock temperatures were even cooler.
Another cold front will be making its way through the state later this week. And that has many wondering, "when will freezing temperatures arrive in Texas"?
The answer of course varies. Those in the Panhandle will get colder temperatures way before those along the Gulf get freezing temperatures. But make no mistake, the first frost for many in Texas is coming, and some will see it in just a few weeks, or possibly in a few days.
According to the National Weather Service, people in Amarillo can expect their first frost on average to be around10/16-10/20. Though the TexasAlmanac.com says the average date for Amarillo is October 20.
Meanwhile, if you are in Houston, you will be waiting until December 20 on average for the first freeze of the year.
Here is the average date of the first freeze for some Texas cities.
Amarillo: October 20
Abilene: November 12
Dallas: November 25
Dalhart: October 16
Morton: October 24
Stratford: October 15
Lipscomb: October 11
Hereford: October 19
Fredericksburg: November 12
Lubbock: November 1
Wichita Falls: November 9
Austin: December 6
By the way, the Farmer's Almanac is predicting Lubbock will see its first frost on November 5.
As you can tell, some places in Texas are just weeks away from their first freeze. So go ahead and pick up some firewood because those frosty temps will be here before you know it.
