An explosion in a Lubbock apartment complex started a two-alarm fire this morning, leaving almost 40 people homeless.

The incident happened at around 9:20 this morning at the Briercroft Manor Apartments in the 1300 block of 65th drive. 7 people were injured. Three of those, including one small child, received critical burns. 16 units were destroyed in the blaze which took about two hours to extinguish.

Deputy Fire Marshal Robert Loveless confirmed late today that the explosion and fire was fueled by gas. In a release Loveless said that structural damages are consistent with that of low pressure gas explosions. "Preliminary findings on today's fire at Briercroft Manor apartments - this fire was started by a gas utility fueled explosion.  The ignition source is still unknown," said Loveless.  "Apartments are being demolished at this time for safety reasons.  An exact cause determination is pending completion of the investigation."

KAMC 28 reports that tenants notified the maintenance man last night that they could smell gas. Atmos energy says they were never notified of a leak at the complex.

The Salvation Army provided 240 meals to 38 affected individuals. The organization is providing clothing and furniture vouchers to the victims, as well as shelter for about 20 people. You can make a monetary donation to aid the victims of the fire at www.salvationarmylubbock.org.
