Two serious accidents in the past 24 hours in Lubbock have been linked to drunk driving.

Wednesday evening, an SUV driver lost control of the vehicle and caused substantial damage to a home in central Lubbock. The driver jumped an intersection at 46th and Avenue P, crashed through a fence into a home, and rolled a parked pickup truck into another yard. The driver suffered serious injuries. It is believed the driver was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

An even more serious single-vehicle crash occurred Thursday afternoon near an I-27 exit ramp, leaving one dead and two hospitalized. Authorities say the brief high speed chase began when an officer tried to pull a vehicle over for expired registration. The driver, with three passengers, continued driving on I-27 at increasing speeds. When the driver attempted to exit off I-27 near 82nd, the vehicle became airborne, flying fifteen feet in the air, clipping a telephone pole, and rolling over. Two people were thrown from the vehicle.Under closer investigation, officers found drugs and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. An uninjured person from the vehicle told police they had been drinking all day, and said that is why they didn't stop.
