National retailers are still having a tough time dealing with a rough economy and how much it cost to operate. And this week another retailer announced they would be closing nearly 100 stores nationwide.

Dollar General announced this week that they would close 96 Dollar General stores across the United States. The company also announced they would be closing 45 pOpshelf locations in the first quarter of fiscal 2025.

According to WFAA in Dallas, the decision by Dollar General comes after a "store portfolio optimization review". The company looked at individual store performance, expectations for the future and operating conditions.

WFAA reported that the CEO of Dollar General believes their customers are still dealing with a bad financial situation.

Vasos also addressed the challenging economic environment impacting the company’s customers. “Our customers continue to report that their financial situation has worsened over the last year as they have been negatively impacted by ongoing inflation,” he said.

“Many of our customers report that they only have enough money for basic essentials, with some noting that they have had to sacrifice even on the necessities,” Vasos added.

Dollar General has not released a list of stores they plan to close, or when those stores would close. The company operates more than 20,000 locations across the United States.
