Texas Tragedy: Death Toll Continues To Rise After Devastating Floods
Story Updated on 7/7/2025
It was supposed to be a weekend of celebration. But instead, it was a weekend of devastation and death brought on from catastrophic flooding in central Texas.
In the early morning hours on Friday, July 4th the Guadalupe River rose 26 feet within just 45 minutes. The result was flash flooding with a devastating outcome. Rescue workers are still working hard to find survivors from the flooding that occurred in the Texas Hill Country, particularly along the Guadalupe River. Several RV parks and an all-girls camp called Camp Mystic sat along the river.
Death Toll Rises From the Texas Floods
As of this writing, 82 people are confirmed as dead from the Hill Country flooding. That includes 28 children, many of whom were attending the Camp Mystic summer camp. According to the Dallas Morning News, 68 of the deaths were reported in Kerr County.
Governor Greg Abbott says at least 41 people are still unaccounted for but that number could also rise.
The Daily Mail reports that the Texas Division of Emergency Management is predicting the number of deaths will soar past 100 as more bodies are found.
UPDATE 7:58 p.m. 7/7/25- 103 people have been confirmed dead now.
What is Camp Mystic?
Camp Mystic has been at the spotlight of this tragedy. Camp Mystic is an all-girls camp that was established in 1926. It's a very popular Christian camp for girls ages 8-17 in Kerr County. According to the Dallas Morning News, at least 700 girls were attending Camp Mystic and at least 27 girls are still missing.
UPDATE 7/7/25 at 7:08 a.m.-Were There Flood Warnings?
Already, many are asking if there were warnings about flash flooding. NPR has a timeline of events showing that warnings were sent out and that as early as Wednesday, the Texas Division of Emergency Management announced it was activating emergency response teams due to the threat of flooding.
It's hard to imagine anyone thought the river would rise so quickly or that so much rain would fall in as little time.
