Following the recent fire that spread across the Texas Panhandle in mid-May, the City of Amarillo is waiving landfill fees and offering temporary housing to those whose properties have been impacted or destroyed.

Panhandle Debris Removal

The Texas Panhandle Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) is helping impacted residents remove debris from and clean up their properties.

VOAD's mission is to alleviate the impact of disasters across the 26 counties in the Texas Panhandle by fostering cooperation, communication, and collaboration when assisting communities in need.

VOAD is a volunteer organization separate from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Residents seeking assistance in debris removal are invited to contact VOAD either by dialing 211, or by visiting the organization's website.

Panhandle Landfill Fees and Temporary Housing

In addition to debris removal services, the City of Amarillo landfill is waiving fees for impacted residents who haul debris from their properties. Proof of residence is required at the landfill gate.

VOAD has also partnered with Airbnb to provide short-term housing for those affected by the recent fire. Requests for temporary housing can be made by dialing the 211 helpline before the June 4 deadline.

Recent Panhandle Fire

By the weekend of May 15, there were a recorded 11 wildfires burning across the Texas Panhandle. A total of 40,000 acres were reportedly charred as a result.

One notable fire occurred near Canyon when a trestle bridge was fully engulfed in flames. Check out this harrowing video taken by Dan Henry that weekend:
