After An Outbreak of Earthquakes In West Texas, Officials Launch Investigations
Last week was unlike any other that many in the Lone Star State had experienced before. 90 earthquakes hit West Texas within the last week, with at least two of them being felt as far away as Lubbock and portions of Dallas-Fort Worth.
According to KTXS, the first 4.9 earthquake felt last week left not only Scurry County shaking, but other parts of West Texas as well. The earthquakes led the Scurry County Judge to declare a State of Disaster after a 5.1 magnitude earthquake that originated east of Snyder was felt in Lubbock and as far away as parts of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
Officials with Scurry County took to Facebook over the weekend to announce why they had declared a State of Emergency.
Now officials at the Texas Railroad Commission are opening an investigation into the earthquakes to see why they are happening. According to seekingalpha.com, the Texas Railroad Commission will be inspecting disposal wells within the cluster of the quakes.
"In efforts to reduce seismicity possibly caused by underground injection of produced water, several operators in the area have converted deep saltwater disposal wells to shallow saltwater disposal wells within the last year," the Railroad Commission said.
Five earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.0 or greater have hit West Texas since July 23.
