Mary Gerlach with Lubbock's Meals on Wheels program spoke with Lubbock's First News' Tom Collins and Laura Mac to discuss how United Supermarkets is partnering with Sara Lee to raise funds for the Meals on Wheels program.

Beginning November 14 and running through November 22, United and Sara Lee are promoting the "Easy as Pie" campaign. When United customers make a $5 donation to Meals on Wheels, they will receive a coupon for a free Sara Lee frozen pie.

This is the 23rd Annual "Easy as Pie " campaign, and Gerlach said this is the organization's second largest fund raiser.

Last year's campaign raised close to $60,000 and the goal for this year's campaign is $70,000.

"All of (the funds) come right back to Lubbock Meals on Wheels to help offset the cost of food and coolers," said Gerlach. "We don't pay for gas or anything because the volunteers all do that. We feed over 700 people a day now and have 53 volunteers in the building  every morning ready to drive."

Meals on Wheels helps provide hot meals and companionship for senior citizens and others that need help in caring for themselves.
