Two outstanding members of a local organization have been recognized.

Rocky Sabins and Isabel Alvarez have been named as the 2011 Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year by the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock-Plainview.

Sabins and Alvarez were nominated by staff members of the local organization, and were picked among hundreds of volunteers that participate in the program.

Sabins said “When I signed up to be a ‘big’ I thought it would be for the benefit of the ‘little’ assigned to me. Big Brothers Big Sisters has proven to be an enriching experience for both Fernando and me.”

Alvarez has been with her “little sister” Layla for about 1 year and 4 months, and family members say Layla has “improved in her overall attitude, her school performance is improving, and she’s learning how to make wise decisions in general.”

The organization will honor the two at the Plainview branch office, located at 705 West 6th Street, Suite 1E on Friday, April 20th at 10:30 a.m. to present the duo with plaques.
