A Texas Tech soccer player has earned a conference award.

Senior goalkeeper Victoria Esson was named as the Big 12 Defensive Player of the week for the second consecutive week.

Esson is the anchor of the Tech defense, which enters the conference tournament ranked second in goals-against average, allowing a total of just six in 19 matches.

The Christchurch, New Zealand native secured her league-leading 13th shutout of the season on Friday as the Red Raiders beat Texas 1-0 at the John Walker Soccer Complex in Lubbock.

Texas Tech opens play at the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday night as the No. 2-seeded Red Raiders face No. 7 seed TCU at 8 p.m. in Kansas City.

Tech enters the tournament with their highest-ever NSCAA Coaches Poll ranking, checking in at No. 11.
