A Texas Tech research division has received national recognition.

Tech’s Center for Study of Addiction and Recovery has been commended in Washington D.C. for a study that helped change the way the federal government focuses on drug use.

The Office of National Drug Control Policy’s reports formerly focused solely on addiction, crime, and punishment, but following Texas Tech’s work on collegiate recovery programs, “recovery” has been added to their national report.

The office cited the Tech CSAR as the model for collegiate recovery programs. CSAR provides peer-based support, 12-step support, and academic services for more than 80 students in recovery from drug and alcohol addictions, as well as eating disorders. The program has now been instituted at 21 campuses nationwide, with more scheduled to open in the fall.

CSAR Director Kitty Harris said “We have produced enough positive results that the White House had no choice but to stop and take notice.”

“Our program is proof that a grass-roots effort, and a little hard work, can really pay off,” Harris elaborated.

CSAR has also been heralded as the “Gold standard of campus recovery programs” by the publication “Inside Higher Ed.”
