Peaceful Austin ICE Protest Escalates into Chaos
On Monday, June 9, there was a planned protest at the Texas Capitol in Austin. This was a part of a nationwide push against Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) efforts to deport criminal illegal immigrants within the country.
There are many, both friends and family alike, who have opposed these actions and have responded with their own message. Peaceful protests have emerged across America, especially in California and cities like Austin, Texas.
ICE Protests in Austin, Texas
Texas DPS alerted the public before the protests began that they were ready to stand guard, just in case.
These demonstrations of standing up against government are perfectly legal and are protected free speech, but oftentimes they devolve into aggression from either side, snowballing into further attacks and injuries, vandalism and targeted media coverage.
A Warning to All Violent Protesters
The protest started peaceful on June 9, where a crowd formed with anti-ICE signs and chants. However, the evening soon took a turn with anti-Trump graffiti on public buildings and pepper spray being deployed from law enforcement.
Governor Abbott took to X to voice his warning to all would-be violent protesters, saying that Texas is a law and order state, and if you are planning on crossing the line, to think again.
Arrests were soon being made as conflict ensued. Some of the arrests made were a group of five men who all received charges ranging from felony criminal mischief to resisting arrest.
In total, at least 13 people were arrested from the Austin protests. In order to subdue the crowds, tear gas and pepper balls were deployed by law enforcement. Pepper balls are similar to paint balls, but inside is an intense irritant like pepper spray that will erupt on the target when fired.
According to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, large rocks were thrown at three Austin officers while a fourth was injured and spit on by another protester.
News agencies across the nation are continually monitoring rising protests and the involvement of law enforcement therein.
