A late start to severe weather season for Lubbock and the South Plains, as today, May 1, is the first day this year with wide-spread severe thunderstorm activity.

Most storms today are forming southwest of Lubbock and the South Plains, and then the systems are moving to the north-northeast.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 11pm, Sunday night, for Lubbock, the South Plains, Amarillo, and the Texas Panhandle.

A Tornado Watch is also in effect for parts of the Permian Basin and South Plains, including Gaines, Borden, Dawson and Scurry counties.
