Severe Storms Bring 70+ mph Winds to the South Plains
Tuesday's nights thunderstorms brought some much needed rain across Lubbock and the South Plains.
There were also some reports of high winds due to the storms. The Texas Tech Mesonet recorded a 78 mph wind speed in Lamesa at 10:45 p.m., and a 72 mph wind speed in O'Donnell at 10:55 p.m.
KAMC News reported a semi truck rolled over on US 87 north of Lamesa due to the high winds.
While the highest wind gust received in Anton on Tuesday night was 54 mph, there was some damage in the town.
The Texas Tech campus received 0.61" of rain on Tuesday. Other regional rainfall totals, via the Texas Tech Mesonet, include:
- Wolfforth: 0.90 inches
- Anton: 1.07 inches
- Andrews: 0.61 inches
- Denver City: 1.31 inches
- Friona: 0.9 inches
- Hobbs, NM: 1.16 inches
- Lamesa: 0.58 inches
- Levelland: 0.84 inches
- Muleshoe: 1.16 inches
- Plainview: 0.76 inches
- Seminole: 0.78 inches
- Sundown: 0.87 inches
- Tahoka: 0.45 inches
Pea-sized hail was also reported in Lubbock on Tuesday night.
For Wednesday, there will be extremely high winds across the entire KFYO daytime listening area, including: Lubbock and the South Plains; the Texas Panhandle; the Permian Basin; Eastern New Mexico; Texoma; the Big County region; and San Angelo and the Concho Valley. Peak wind speeds could exceed 70 mph during Wednesday's severe weather event.
