Texas’ Safe Outdoor Dogs Act Effective as of January 18th
The Safe Outdoor Dogs Act goes into effect Tuesday, January 18th, 2022.
CBS 7 reports the new law further restricts pet owners from chaining their dogs. If outdoor dogs are tied alone in cold weather without proper food and water, as well as shelter, law enforcement will be able to take the dog away.
The law also removes the 24-hour waiting period, which allows authorities to take immediate action if an animal is left outside in poor conditions.
Pet owners who violate the new law will be charged with a Class C misdemeanor and fined up to $500. Individuals who face multiple convictions of the new law can face a Class B misdemeanor, which results in up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,000.
A previous version of the bill, SB 474, was passed by Texas lawmakers, but vetoed by Governor Greg Abbott.
