LISD is joining a growing number of other school districts in a legal challenge to a state education funding system that has forced deep cuts in school budgets.

More than 450 Texas school districts have already expressed their intention to join one of several lawsuits planned against the State.  LISD trustees voted yesterday to sign onto a lawsuit filed by the Texas Taxpayer and Student Fairness Coalition. Lubbock ISD’s state funding for the next two years has been reduced by about 14 million dollars.

The lawsuit filed by the “fairness” coalition says the public school funding system has resulted in tremendous disparity between school districts in per student funding. The group contends that the current funding system is not fair to taxpayers and does not provide local control to deal with the inadequacy of the system.
