Where Fireworks Are Banned in Lubbock—And Why
I don't know if you knew this, but handling miniature bombs with your bare hands can be dangerous, unless you plan on committing to a Captain Hook cosplay.
So, when it comes to safe handling of fireworks in Lubbock, Texas, there are quite a few precautions that must be taken, not the least of which is where in the city you are even allowed to light them.
Fireworks in Lubbock, Texas
First of all, the City of Lubbock forbids any fireworks from inside city limits (yes, even sparklers), any day, any time of the year. Not only is this frowned upon, it's also enforced with a $1000 fine for each violation.
Before you claim that they are just being unpatriotic, let's look at some harm that fireworks often pose to those brave enough to handle them.
Common Firework Injuries
The City of Lubbock Fire Marshal's Office provided some key numbers regarding injuries resulting from unsafe use of fireworks.
They start by saying that, since 2002, there are an average of seven fireworks-related deaths across America, with up to 13,000 injuries reported each year as well.
When it comes to demographics, it turns out that men were involved in 70% of all fireworks-related injuries across the nation. Boys under the age of 15 also accounted for 36% of injuries. As a former 15-year old boy, I can attest that they do some pretty dumb things from time to time.
It's really the private use of fireworks that are the main risk, as public displays only account for less than 1% of injuries. Also, fireworks are known to start roughly 18,500 fires each year, costing an average of $43 million in property damage.
How to Tattle in Lubbock, Texas
If you feel your life or property is at risk from nearby hooligans lighting fireworks a bit too close to your house, you can always file an anonymous online report through the city, or you can call Lubbock's non-emergency number at (806) 775-2865.

Aside from the immense distraction and loud noises, fireworks are illegal within Lubbock city limits since they constitute a public safety hazard.
So, always remember that if you plan on getting your sparkler on with some friends, just take it outside... of city limits.
